The challenge

Sher-e-Darbar has served pure-vegetarian North Indian food in City Center, Gwalior since 2013, and holds a 4.8 rating on Google across nearly 500 reviews. Its reputation was built entirely by word of mouth — online, there was nowhere for a guest to read the menu, plan a party or join a rewards programme before arriving.

Behind the counter, the restaurant's operations lived on paper and spreadsheets: stock, purchases, vendors, salaries and expenses, each in a different register.

How we approached it

We set one rule before writing anything: never invent content. No made-up chef names, review quotes, prices or offers. Anything the restaurant had not supplied yet was marked as a visible placeholder, so nothing on the live site could be mistaken for a claim the restaurant didn't make.

The second rule was the restaurant's own: pure veg, everywhere. A content check guards every page and every database record — including the store room — so a non-vegetarian ingredient cannot be entered at all.

For the back office, the owner entered a week of the restaurant's real paperwork into the system. Every wall they hit became a change: separate lists for the tills and accounts money comes from, bills with totals, bulk salary entry, and dates fixed to Indian time so the dashboard always shows the restaurant's actual day.

What we built

The story

Twelve years of the restaurant's history, told in its own words — nothing written for it.

Content dashboard

The restaurant edits its own menu, photographs and pages without calling a developer.

Restaurant books

Stock, purchases, vendors, payroll, expenses and reports in one back office the owner uses daily.

Where it stands
  • The site is live at sheredarbar.com, with the homepage built around one continuous WebGL take of the restaurant's signature Paneer Angara.
  • The back office is in daily use: the restaurant's salary sheet and operating records now live in it rather than on paper.
